Georgia’s former prime minister is speaking out from prison – and accusing his former allies of political blackmail.
Currently serving a five-year sentence after pleading guilty to money laundering, Irakli Garibashvili claims officials demanded another confession to prevent his return to politics. New bribery charges and the resignation of an official he named have intensified scrutiny, although the government rejects his allegations and denies any connection to the departure. His prison letters also raise questions about his relationship with Georgian Dream founder Bidzina Ivanishvili, to whom he still professes loyalty.
In this episode of Eastern Express, host Benjamin Lee and his guest, George Melashvili, President of the Europe-Georgia Institute, examine what is proven, what remains disputed, and what this confrontation reveals about the people running Georgia.
