this is what happens when you go from buying gas on long term contracts (fixed prices) and go to buying gas at the spot price (short term contracts at variable prices depending on market conditions). it makes the companies buying the gas much more money when its cheap and plentiful but loads the volatility risk on to the end consumer when its not. either way the energy companies still make their profits and the consumer gets hammered when supply shocks emerge.
