Spain, and probably other European countries, need to change the law so that foreigners cannot own houses or apartments because private equity firms will buy up the housing Spanish workers need. They are already buying up vet and dental firms here in the States. Then they fire people and run down the businesses. Spain should ban the renting of homes and apartments for AIRbnb or similar businesses.

ASK AI: What are the nationalities of most owners of real estate investment companies in Spain?

For residential housing blocks and large asset portfolios: Most controlling owners/founders are American (led by US private equity giants like Blackstone and Cerberus).

For prime commercial, retail, and office real estate: Most key owners are Spanish (led by domestic billionaires and banks) or Middle Eastern sovereign funds.

As much as I feel empathetic for this case,I still don’t understand how can government can force private owners what to do with their private property.
How can you forbid someone from wanting to charge market value for their property, forbid to raise rent while everything goes up.
Makes no sense.

The fact is that all sorts of companies and people have spent years buying up properties and then making people homeless in the pursuit of profit. In Madrid families have to share a flat just to keep a roof over their heads and even the cost of a single room is half a month's salary. Meanwhile an larger numbers of homes are being turned into holiday lets and accommodation for wealthy expats and digital nomads. The country needs as much public housing as France, maybe more considering the growth of the population. The rental market is the least regulated in Europe, this obviously isn't working for renters or for the country.

Is there no end to squatting? Old people must be respected and allowed to live in peace but there are limits. This woman moved in when the previous resident died. There must be some social structure to fill the gap.
