Russia’s great democratic tradition has delivered another spectacular result – and somehow, the Kremlin got exactly what it wanted.
United Russia is set to take a massive parliamentary majority, with Putin quickly explaining that the result supposedly represents a vote of confidence in the army and Russia’s military operations. Because apparently, when you vote in a parliamentary election, you’re also signing up for the war, higher military spending, and whatever else comes next.
The Kremlin can now point to the numbers whenever it needs another justification: more money for the war? You voted for it. More draft notices? Well, apparently you voted for those too. And despite repeated assurances that another mobilization is not needed, Russian men may want to keep a close eye on their mailboxes. Democracy has spoken – and apparently, it has quite a long to-do list.
In the new episode of Break The Fake, Jonasz Rewiński looks at Russia's election results, Putin's ""vote of confidence"" and how the Kremlin can turn almost any result into another reason to keep the war machine running.
