The EU has agreed to extend its Russia sanctions regime from six-month renewals to a three-year cycle. But does it achieve anything more than sparing EU officials the need to discuss the matter twice a year?
“It’s excellent news because it was actually prompted by this infamous decision to lift sanctions against two Russian oligarchs,” said TVP World Editor-in-Chief Michał Broniatowski. “It means that for the next three years, no country will be able to put its foot in the door in order to blackmail the rest of the European Union members on extending the sanctions.”
The move followed efforts to remove sanctions on Russian businessmen Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman, a dispute that exposed divisions within the EU.
“There are industries which were not touched, for example, nuclear industry or liquid gas, which is necessary for some countries which cannot easily import it from elsewhere,” Broniatowski also said. “So there is still space to do harm to Russia.”
He also pointed to new sanctions powers granted to Donald Trump by the Graham Bill recently passed by the U.S. Congress, arguing that “The best way to force Russia to move is by power.”
“And this power is exerted by Ukraine and it should be supported by, among others, the European Union,” said TVP World’s Editor-in-Chief. “Which is happening – it would be better if it was more prompt and more unanimous.”
