Former Australian ambassador to the US, and former treasurer, Joe Hockey says the meeting of US President Donald Trump and China's President Xi Jinping in Washington will focus more on trade and tariffs than the AI race.
Even so, warnings on AI are coming thick and fast ahead of Thursday's summit. It comes as Australia's Prime Minister joins the leaders of 19 other nations to call for safeguards on AI, and to make sure it remains under human control.
On the US midterm elections. Mr Hockey says it's "perfectly feasible" that the Republicans will lose both the House and the Senate.
And the now-president of Bondi Partners says that could accelerate some of Donald Trump's decision-making, including being "extremely aggressive towards companies that are in any way acting contrary to the interests of the American people."
In this wide-ranging interview, Joe Hockey also touches on domestic issues including the federal budget implications of the latest intergenerational report as well as Australia's current migration debate, which he says is timely.
"I live in the United States. It's an unseemly debate when you get down to racial profiling and a range of other things. I think, you know, I want us to continue to have a sensible discourse, bearing in mind that the Australian people feel very strongly about it. And sometimes if you don't have a proper debate, then it's worse in Australia because people feel as though they're not being heard and it's absolutely essential that everyone, from Betty Bankstown to Mary Melbourne, that they all have an opportunity to be heard and you've got to listen to them," Mr Hockey said.
