China has actually saved the world fuel markets. When Trump attacked Iran the closing of Hormuz meant the world was short of 20% of fuel needed every day. China stopped buying and relied on its huge reserves. It would appear that China has saved the world from a collapsing economy brought on solely because Trump decided to blow Iran up.

Very roughly, if both countries spent $500 billion building comparable AI data centers with the same-generation accelerators, the US might support around 10–11 GW of IT capacity, while China could potentially support 13–15 GW, because Chinese construction and infrastructure costs can be lower. That could mean roughly 6–7 million high-end AI GPUs in the US versus 8–9 million in China, or around 30% more physical compute capacity in China. On top of that, operating costs matter: for processing the same amount of data, China could potentially spend less on electricity, cooling, labor, land, and other data-center operating expenses than the US, although the actual difference depends heavily on electricity prices, utilization, hardware efficiency, and location. So $500 billion could potentially buy and operate substantially more AI compute in China than in the US.
