Russia calls itself an energy superpower. Apparently, that now means telling drivers how much gasoline they are allowed to buy.
The fuel crisis is back with renewed force. In St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region, long queues, limited supplies, and a 30-liter-per-vehicle limit are making filling up feel like a luxury. Around 20% of independent and small gas stations have reportedly stopped operating, while Russian officials say the situation should improve by October. Repeated Ukrainian drone strikes have damaged Russian refining capacity, while the Kremlin continues selling an image of an unstoppable energy giant. Nothing says “oil superpower” quite like rationing gasoline.
In the new episode of Break The Fake, Jonasz Rewiński looks into Russia’s worsening fuel crisis – and what happens when an energy superpower runs short of gasoline.
