What are your saying? Associate means preferential partnership like the EU is going to do with other parts of the world.

I hope every united states citizens is watching who the real enemies are now.
The reason why this treacherous globalist that Trump is fighting against is why Russia launched a war against Ukraine.
The USA refused to be fleeced by a small market of 100 billion dollars every year for decades.
They will pay.

"Associate membership" is useful. The relevance is not that that it doesnt hold a defined meaning. Nor is it really relevant the two sides are not in agreement about the proposed-term. Rather it's about the idea of deeper integration, cooperation, strategic alignment and partnership. Carney gave a well-articulated response: refusing the term while agreeing to the substance.

Remember... EU parliamentarians have been joking since stud-boi Trudeau about Canada joining the EU, and as recently as in the past month or so. These are off-the-cuff comments, but behind the scenes, these are very real discussions. The people who arent ready (and rightfully so) are the populations. A LOT of discussions need to happen before a formal membership definition is made public and stated as the intended goal. For now... we're playing diplomacy; both sides know the alignment and integration is a huge benefit both ways. Now it's just a question of hammering out the framework and early roadmap.

TLDR -while Im fully onboard with Canada joining the EU as a full member, to fixate on the "associate membership" is putting the cart before the horse. The real work is happening in spite the no doubt regular floating of trial balloons about the long-term outlooks on our partnership.

trump hreatens canada associated eu membership as "hostile action" shows the USA is the enemy. a country that makes map where canada is part of USA is clearly an enemy

People who have a shared interest in trade also have a shared interest to protect that trade. Economics and Military do go hand in hand here very nicely.

As a Canadian - and as a lot of Canadians - I am not wagging my tail like a Pavlovian dog at this confused EU linkage talk. The idea has not been put to the Canadian Parliament (which Mr. Carney has not recalled). Ultimately, Canadians will not want to sign on to the suffocating regulations of Brussels officialdom. So this is all fancy talk - the kind Obama specialized in. Show us some substance. For European and American observers entranced with Mr. Carney....he is going to have a "show us the beef" moment. This is all Honeymoon stuff.

I'll be interested in what would be different from Canada just becoming a part of EFTA like Switzerland, Norway, etc.

I reckon this would be like an outer ring to EFTA, first Canada then the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Japan, S. Korea?

Carney may not want a deeper rapprochement with the EU, but he's using the entire situation as a bargaining chip with the U.S. And if Canada and the U.S. reach an agreement, the EU will be pushed into the background.
