The problem with Fans and random people in general is that they believe these Billionaires and Kazillionaires will use their money to make our lives better. That a Billionaire will buy their team they root for, invest capital and improve the chances of winning by buying. It doesn’t work, if anything, the product gets worse a lot of the time. They are investing to make money and nothing else.

Watching this, I'm reminded of the worst period of ownership for the Cincinnati Reds was when it was owned by one of the (then) richest people in the country, Carl Lindner. Carl spent to get Ken Griffey Jr. on the team that had a miracle season in 1999, and then they flopped. For years. Until Carl finally sold the team to current ownership. (Sure, the current owners are no picnic either, but this is about Carl.)

How could a team that did so well in 1999 and added one of the most exciting players in MLB during the offseason flop so hard, with such a rich owner at the helm? A big part of it was Carl's insistence on the Reds turning a profit every year, and the only way they'd get more investment from the Big Man was if they did turn a profit. Otherwise he cut the salary pool and ballpark/team services.

I find Private Equity's purchase of stakes in sports teams to be an eerie reflection of Carl's belief that he could run the Reds just like one of his other businesses. The Reds' fan base has been seriously damaged over the years from both Carl's and the current ownership's management, and it has never recovered. (You'd have thought Marge Schott had ruined the team, but Carl said "Hold my beer.") Private Equity probably wouldn't care about the average fan at all as long as they have just enough whales out there to buy everything they're selling concerning the sports teams.

There are teams that have abused their teams' trust. Look at the Pittsburgh Pirates or the Cincinnati Bengals. Not Private Equity ownership, just bad owners who don't prioritize winning over "good business". Can we see in the data any evidence that those franchises have lost fans? I think it's time to stop just asking questions and bring some facts to these conversations about what the future looks like

The mad dash into gambling by all of the pro (and college) sports leagues is a hedge against losing fan loyalty. If they can get away with alienating fans by their constant gouging and bottom line decisions, and fill that hole with gambling revenue, turning pro sports into nothing but content for the growing array of betting platforms, then they'd be more than happy to do so. THAT is private equity in a nutshell.

When an insurance company needs money to pay out obligations from an unexpected events like natural disasters, they prior contract, with third party reinsurance companies who provide the funding needed for all payouts. The new problem with private equity companies is that they create fake third party reinsurance companies lacking sufficient funds. They use their own affiliated “subsidiary” companies who are not real third party reinsurance companies and move them to the Bahamas, the new hub for reinsurance corruption Labeling them third party reinsurance companies immune from any government oversight. Even investors or stock holders who sue cannot find out what actual funds are in the reinsurance entity. Why? It is a private equity holding. They are just empty shell companies. Private equity needs these fake reinsurance companies to access very large loans to buy everything from AI data centers, or sports teams. Total scam. This bubble will burst like the mortgage scandal of 2008.

The internet is dead and now so are sports. If i follow that line of thinking eventually it leads me to think that humans are empty consumption shells that prop up a system that is doomed to fail. the German Bundesliga has a great model for this imo. All clubs have to be majority owned by the fans themselves, commonly called the 50+1 rule. The Bundesliga is also the highest-attended top European football league, with the highest average attendance, and even the 2. Bundesliga (the second tier) is among the top 10 highest attended leagues in Europe. The focus is on the fans, and it makes for an amazing “product”

It’s getting and going to be out of control. Long gone are the days where families held on to the sports franchise for decades upon decades. It’s easy to just cash in and ride off into the sunset for these families that bought these teams a few for a few hundred grand back 80 or so years ago. Especially the NFL teams that are historically bad are worth more than ever. The incentive for winning is gone. The incentive is to just field a team and people will come and watch and pay.

The City of Portland and State of Oregon are on the verge of capitulating to the new owner of the Portland Trailblazers Tom Dundon and his investment group over 600 million of Moda Center arena upgrades. These are Public Dollars (debt really) extorted by a group of people worth 10.8 billion. The Arena upgrades are equivalent to 5.5% of the owner groups private wealth. So I think Dundon is a greedy Fk and the city council and governor's office are spineless. Oregon should enact a 5% wealth tax for any Billionaire with a financial stake in businesses in the State. Then he can have his arena upgrades.
