1 800 delegates from 16 affiliate unions expected to vote for COSATU's leadership

Cosatu's 15th national congress has kicked off with an unexpected turn of events. Trade union affiliates were expected to hand in their credentials as a first item of the congress. But at least seven unions have declared that they will not submit their credentials to Congress.

Led by the NUM, these also include SAMWU, SACCAWU, and workers in the financial sector, SASBO.

The issue stems around Nehwau suspending its President, Mike Shingange, last Friday.
