The Community of Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria, has complained strongly about the health-threatening effects of illegal dumping and the burning of waste, which harms the environment and exacerbates air pollution.
This emerged at the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies and E-waste collection event earlier on Monday.
Addressing the community, Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment, Bernice Swarts, confirmed that Atteridgeville has been declared a high-priority area because of poor air quality.
Swarts also confirmed that South Africa is 14 percent behind in meeting the World Health Organisation standards for clean air.
