The Economic History of Bharat: 2,000 Years of Global Dominance and Plunder 🕊️
For over a millennium, ancient Bharat was the undisputed economic center of the world. Known globally as Sone Ki Chidiya, the Indian subcontinent generated over 32% of global GDP between 0 CE and 1000 CE—outpacing every other civilization in trade, manufacturing, and innovation.
In this episode of Infinite India – The Bharatiya Way, we analyze the hard economic data behind Bharat’s historic wealth, the impact of foreign invasions, and the systematic drain that altered its trajectory.
📌 Key Highlights:
The $45 Trillion Drain: Breaking down economist Utsa Patnaik’s research on the wealth extracted during the British Raj.
The 32% Global GDP Era: Angus Maddison’s world-renowned economic data on ancient India's 1,000-year market dominance.
The Nader Shah Plunder (1739): How looting Delhi alone yielded 8,050 tons of silver—funding a 3-year tax holiday in Iran.
The Maritime & Trade Engine: How monsoon trade winds, fertile lands, Wootz steel, and global exports powered the ancient Indian economy.
Systemic Deindustrialization: The economic fallout of foreign invasions, destroyed trade hubs, and the destruction of educational institutions like Nalanda.
The Resurgence: From India's lowest economic point in the 1980s to its post-1991 economic revival.
