When they are on house arrest no one ever even checks on them and they commit another crime! Someone who could murder a co-worker like he did and get a life sentence, doesn't care about food or essentials at this point. He is in survival mode! The only thing he cares about right now is being free from prison! Also, what happen to the regular count that the prisons do? Even if it was late at night, the correctional officers are supposed to do a routine walk and check. At this point, he would rather die than go back to prison for life!
