I watched the whole thing,

and the scheme really did work like a casting call. Some of the details are exquisite: an operative traveling the state under a fake name, buying beers for strangers in pubs, pitching the role to any man who answered to Dan Sullivan. Job requirements: the name. Everything else — no interest in politics, no campaign, no visible pulse — a bonus. They found him. A retired teacher whose entire pitch was, quote, he hates Trump, he likes Mary, he'd do anything to help. Ladies and gentlemen, the candidate — a man with no interest in the job, running for the job, to help the person he's running against. That's not a spoiler, that's a hostage with filing paperwork.

And the network airing all this has been rehearsing the show for six years. "They only win by rigging elections" was the thesis; every anchor has the monologue memorized; and this week the Democrats finally delivered the set. A fire brigade that spends six years at the station doesn't pour water gently. There was even time for a host in Dallas handing out cinnamon rolls like Oprah — you get a roll, and you get a roll — a morning show so fluent it reports a constitutional crisis and a bake sale in the same tone of voice. To be fair, that might be the honest one. The rolls are real.

Here's the detail nobody should skip: Lisa Murkowski — the senator who fights with the president weekly and might leave the party on principle — came out and said outright that recruiting candidates to manipulate the field is simply wrong. Run and win on your own merits. When the colleague least likely to agree with the Hannity couch agrees with the Hannity couch, you've achieved a consensus not seen since the moon landing. Ballot stacking managed what six years of statecraft couldn't.

And in the other segment, a member of Congress got her home raided weeks before her election and raised eight hundred forty-seven thousand dollars the same day — the first house search in American history that turned a profit for the person searched. The department insists none of it is political, which it announced while deciding whether to keep searching her possessions, days before early voting ends, in a case it hasn't decided to bring. The warrant is half-executed and the calendar is fully transparent.

But the week's most honest moment belongs to the fired campaign manager who blew the whistle — and then, the moment the story ran, tried to claw back every word of it. The Times' reply was the most refreshing sentence in the whole broadcast: I don't think so. Somewhere in America there's one person who told the truth for almost an entire news cycle. In this election, that's a résumé.
