Seven months ago the City of Johannesburg lost access to all automated traffic speed cameras.
The Johannesburg Metro Police Department contract with service provider, Syntell, lapsed in December, 2025, and no replacement has been appointed yet.
Syntell reportedly removed its cameras and back end systems, so automated speed prosecutions are completely halted.
The JMPD says its now navigating the necessary municipal supply chain and procurement processes to appoint a new service provider.
SABC News Reporter Refilwe Mekoa says it has also issued a stern warning to all road users that Johannesburg is not a speed free zone
