A six week expedition to Antarctica has wrapped up for a team of deep-sea divers from Florida who have been collecting samples of toxins, produced by a tiny marine organism.
Ascidians, also known as Sea Squirts, thrive in icy waters and use toxins to protect them against predators and disease.
Early testing by scientists from the University of South Florida suggests those toxins could be used to help kill melanoma cells in humans. Professor Bill Baker says mice with cancer cells have responded well to the toxin, which is encouraging for humans.
