A new study by the University of Cape Town has revealed alarming levels of alcohol use among adolescent girls and young women in South Africa.
Researchers found that nearly one in three young women surveyed consumed alcohol, while hazardous and binge drinking patterns were common - especially among those out of school and living in urban areas.
Experts warn that the findings are deeply concerning, particularly because young women remain one of the most vulnerable groups to HIV infection in the country.
