When the Carter case begins in 2011, public debate over the right to die is raging. Protesters hang effigies and draw chalk outlines on the courthouse steps. Yet inside the courtroom, Lee Carter’s team convinces the judge the laws banning doctor-assisted suicide are unconstitutional. But the victory is short-lived. The ruling is appealed, a key plaintiff dies, and eventually Lee’s legal fight for her mother’s legacy takes her all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada.
Host Falen Johnson and journalist Clare Bonnyman pick up the second part of the Carter family’s story — how the landmark ruling in Canada vs. Carter opens the door to medical assistance in dying in Canada, and how it eventually allows Lee’s son, Price, to use MAID to end his suffering from pancreatic cancer.
This episode is part two of two.
