Potash is the one mineral nobody argues about, because almost nobody has heard of it. Nothing grows without it, and America imports 92 per cent of what it uses — more than 70 per cent of that from Canada. Those are not our numbers. They were read out on Fox Business on September 9th, by the anchor, immediately after she quoted the line that America does not need anything Canada has.
The same programme then produced the map: almost 80 per cent of the world's potash comes from five countries — Canada, Belarus, Russia, Israel and Jordan — and four of the five are in conflict zones. Two weeks earlier, and 3,000 kilometres away, the premier of Saskatchewan had drawn the same map without knowing it. He was arguing against putting an export tax on potash, and the country he named as the place America would go instead was Belarus.
We have kept his criticism of his own side too: he says Canadian port governance is what limits how much potash can leave.
