I believe Caleb is closeted and his misogynistic rage at essentially living a lie (and possibly feeling trapped in it) and/or being held accountable for unacceptable behaviors by his wife likely contributed to this. This is my impression and best guess...

Why is somebody going to come into that house, go straight to the bedroom, execute his wife, but not look for the others to do the same thing too? Doesn't happen unless someone in the house did it or someone was hired. No coincidence he's claiming to just happen to be in the children's room when this took place in the middle of the night.
