Because there's no atmosphere a bullet can literally travel forever and very fast. A gattling gun could fire from space towards the ground and it would be called a "Kinetic Weapon" and could take out acres of an enemy base. Not everything is going to be a laser beam. But that too has been developed along with microwaves and solar waves or concentrated light. The guns would have limited ammo but the others would have unlimited ammo. But only limited by there orbit. If you want a defense against incoming asteroids you need to be in space. There could also be space weapons orbiting the moon .
