One Nation leader Pauline Hanson faced widespread condemnation on Monday after remarks she made on conservative-leaning Jamie J podcast came to light, where she described Indigenous Australians as "the most primitive race on Earth."
Politicians from across the divide swiftly rebuked the comments, among them Indigenous Australians Minister Malarndirri McCarthy, who said they were "derogatory" and "completely racist" and urged her to apologise.
In her first public remarks since, Senator Hanson said "If I have offended people by using that, yes I will apologise for that."
She also argued her comments about the prime minister's mother were not "derogatory".
Speaking on Afternoon Briefing, government minister Madeleine King described Pauline Hanson's qualified apology as a "pseudo apology" and "pathetic".
"Sorry if I have caused offence' is not really an apology... she says outrageous things about Indigenous Australians, disgusting things and then walks back into this building and says she did not say it at all. That is gaslighting."
