In conversation with the ancients: Drawing new life from timeless stories

What does Mulan mean to a young artist today? For Chinese artist and picture-book creator Ye Luying, she is more than a legendary warrior.

Having grown up in a small town before pursuing her dreams in a big city, Ye sees her own journey in Mulan's: leaving home, facing uncertainty and making choices of her own.

From Nymph of the Luo River (Luoshenfu), winner of the Best Illustration Gold Award at the 13th Golden Dragon Award, to her latest picture book on Mulan, Ye continues to revisit ancient stories through a contemporary lens.

For her, creating picture books on stories dating back 1,000 years is a way of "having a conversation with the ancients," as these stories still speak to us today.
