Trump heads to Ireland for diplomacy and golf amid planned protests

US President Donald Trump is visiting Ireland on Saturday, combining diplomacy with a trip to his own golf resort. He will meet Ireland's prime minister and president at state residences in Dublin's Phoenix Park, before heading west to Doonbeg, which is hosting the Irish Open, keeping him away from planned protests in the capital.

Polls suggest most Irish people oppose the visit, but economic ties with the US run deep.

Independent businesses have felt the fallout from Trump's tariffs, with shop owner Clare Grennan describing the scramble to keep shipping to American customers. Protesters, including lawmaker Richard Boyd Barrett, cite anger over Trump's role in the war in Gaza, strong Irish support for Palestinians, and rising energy and fuel costs.
