Sometimes I wonder if that white girl and black girl and even Diana Ross where indeed placed there for that brilliant opening bit. Having that stunning white girl there on one side and the black girl on the other, allowing him to move back and forth across the stage. The two perfectly separated on either side with Diana Ross in the middle. The positioning is really quite perfect for the bit. Almost too perfect to be a coincidence.

i can't think of a more masterful use of crowdwork. instead of playing it safe, hitting a captive audience with material he knows will kill, he empowers his audience in an open comedic space—no spotlight, the houselights as bright as the stage—and is both uncompromising in his opinions as he is vulnerable. he asked every woman for their name before acting out harassment scenarios. he began by admitting defeat and his disillusionment about it. he talks about football being ruined by empathy for injured opponents and later says he can't value a person who dislikes animals.<br><br>richard pryor is the greatest stand-up comedian that has ever lived. in this performance patrice was his equal.
