On this episode of Ukraine This Week, Don Arleth is joined by Peter Zalmayev, Director of the Eurasia Democracy Initiative, to examine what’s behind Russia’s continued war in Ukraine and where the conflict may be heading.
They discuss CIA Director John Ratcliffe’s visit to Moscow, Putin’s calculations, and whether Washington has enough leverage to persuade the Kremlin to pursue peace. The conversation also explores the growing threat to NATO, particularly the Baltic states, as well as Russia’s use of cyberattacks, sabotage, and political pressure across Europe.
As the war increasingly becomes a battle of endurance, they look at Ukraine’s attacks on Russian logistics alongside Russia’s strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure and energy facilities ahead of another difficult winter. Zalmayev argues that Putin is betting on Western divisions and Ukrainian exhaustion – but, as he puts it, Putin may once again be “naive in his calculations” about Ukraine’s ability to resist.
