Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training is preparing to launch a probe into student accommodation, amid allegations of overcharging and poor living conditions.
Committee chairperson Walter Letsie says they will engage the Department of Higher Education and Training, the Special Investigating Unit and other stakeholders, as they move to investigate concerns about accommodation funded by NSFAS.
Letsie says some institutions are allegedly overbilling the scheme while students are forced to live in substandard facilities, with some residences reportedly lacking even basic necessities such as proper beds.
