In this episode of Nalanda Talkies, Dilip Mandal speaks with Ashish Chauhan, MD & CEO of the National Stock Exchange, on how India’s economic transformation is closely tied to the rise of its capital markets. The conversation explains how digitalisation, especially UPI, mobile access, and the broader JAM (Jan Dhan–Aadhaar–Mobile) trinity, has significantly boosted participation in the stock market. As the economy has become more formal and tech-driven, the capital markets have expanded in tandem. Since 2014, market capitalisation has grown six to seven times, reflecting both policy shifts and rising investor confidence. India now has around 12.9 crore investors, more investor families than farmer families, with strong participation from the middle class and youth. A major highlight is the surge in women investors, who now make up nearly 25% of the total. With greater financial awareness, mobile access, and targeted empowerment initiatives, women are emerging as informed and confident participants in the share market. The episode also touches on how mutual funds are onboarding millions of new investors, making equity participation more accessible.
