The US Geological Survey (USGS) estimates the death toll from two successive earthquakes in Venezuela could reach 100,000.
A magnitude 7.2 and a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck about 160 kilometres west of Caracas, causing widespread destruction in Caracas and other areas near the epicentre of the tremors.
USGS assistant coordinator William Barnhart says there is likely a catastrophic loss of human lives because the earthquakes hit very close to a densely populated region.
