The family of former Zambian President, Edgar Lungu, has pleaded with the Supreme Court of Appeal to overturn the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria's judgment.
It claims it sets a terrible precedent of a state overriding the burial rights and wishes of widows, where the deceased is a former president.
They say the August 2025 judgment ruled in favour of the Zambian government in the protracted battle over the remains of the late former statesman, and found that Zambia is entitled to repatriate Lungu's remains for the purposes of a state funeral and burial.
This is contrary to the Lungu family's wishes to have him buried in South Africa, and NOT his homeland of Zambia.
