Former colonial powers must pay reparations to Africa through increased foreign direct investment, market access, skills and technology transfer, as well as the return of historical artefacts to their countries of origin.
This is the call made by President Cyril Ramaphosa in his letter to the nation today, as the country enters Africa Month, commemorated annually in May.
He says western countries grew wealthy from the vast tracts of African land they forcibly occupied and the valuable resources they extracted.
Reparations, he says, must assist the continent to tackle debt challenges, poverty alleviation, inequality and unemployment.
