The term "Artificial Intelligence" (AI) has arguably become one of the most overused buzzwords of our time—frequently leveraged for marketing hype, corporate branding, and public relations smoothing.
While SBS Transit’s pilot of an AI control system (FlowOS) to address bus bunching sounds sophisticated on paper, consumers have a right to be skeptical. An "intent to improve" does not automatically guarantee noticeable,
everyday enhancements for the commuting public, nor does it inherently justify the capital expenditure if the final outcome amounts to a marginal, fractional shift.
We see a similar playbook across the wider transit sector. Rolling out predictive AI for rail maintenance does not magically eliminate disruptions or mechanical vulnerabilities. When systemic breakdowns inevitably occur,
high-tech justifications do little to comfort stranded commuters, especially when corporate narratives quickly pivot to citing inevitable wear and tear. True value for money is measured by consistent on-the-ground reliability,
not by the complexity of the software managing the network.
