Amazon’s CTO: Artificial Intelligence is not that smart | On The Record

Werner Vogels, Chief Technology Officer at Amazon, joins Adam Jasser in a special edition of On the Record to discuss how artificial intelligence is reshaping jobs, productivity and the global economy and why the biggest risks may come not from the technology itself, but from the way people choose to use it.

Vogels argues that AI is unlikely to eliminate jobs on a massive scale, but will automate repetitive work and push people toward roles that depend more on judgment, creativity and empathy. He explains why large language models “don’t look for the truth” but for plausibility, warns that autonomous AI agents require much stronger guardrails in high-risk areas and says regulators are still struggling to keep pace with the speed of technological change.

He also questions whether the extraordinary expectations surrounding AI can be met, pointing to the growing “token economy” and the need for companies to weigh the cost of AI against the value it actually creates. At the same time, he sees major productivity gains in areas such as software development, security and legal research, as well as opportunities for technology to help ageing societies and allow elderly people to remain independent for longer.
