How Russia is militarizing its universities | Eastern Express

Russia is increasingly transforming its universities into a pipeline for the war in Ukraine, and the militarization is affecting students even before they enter higher education. Getting into a Russian university is becoming harder for students with top exam scores as special quotas reserve state-funded places for participants in the war and their families, while universities simultaneously recruit students into military service, expand drone programs and train specialists for the defense industry. Investigations show that drone-related programs and recruitment efforts are now present in 81 of Russia’s 83 regions, with some students offered financial and academic incentives to join the military.

On this episode of Eastern Express, Benjamin Lee is joined by Jason Corcoran, journalist and author of "Leaving Russia," to examine how the war is reshaping access to education, creating privileges and turning universities into a source of manpower. Meaning, effectively preparing an entire generation for a permanently militarized society, which can only mean Russia’s potential confrontation with the West.
