Today I changed a starter on a 09 323i for my buddie saved him 1500$ but we went to start the car and it didn’t even start made the same noise it did as before but at least it doesn’t have a dead starter anymore 🤷

Had a 2014 Mazda CX5, regular maintenance, never gave me issues. One day, it wouldn't turn on. Got told it was the fuel pump. Paid 2000. Still didnt turn on. They then did a compression test and told me there was no compression is all cylinders. Quoted me $8000 to replace upper half of engine. I decided to trade it in for $1000.

Ive learned how to fix stuff, not just cars by using old books, and the internet. Ive done a timing chain on a 93 dakota. water pump, intake, valve cover, oil pump, turbo, cats on a 19 chevy trax. I always do my oil changes, brakes stuff like that myself. Ill learn how to replace the clutch on 2019 mistubishi mirage when it comes time

LOVEEE my 03 accord EX. It’s got less than 140,000 miles on its engine is golden inside after I did the gaskets. All new struts, axel, knuckle, rotors and brakes. Put a brand new starter, altntetor and battery. I wanna do the interior next cause it’s BEAT. Put it a new radio (the speakers are SMACKIN already and it’s stock) genuinely love my car so much I need to put a turbo on it but I’m broke broke 😭

16 year mechanic here, just saying our trade is cursed. We’re universally hated by everyone, essential to keeping the country going but nobody wants to pay us fairly, initial start up cost for a trade is the most expensive with the lowest wages across the trades and cars/trucks/offroad equipment keeps getting more complex and worse. <br><br>One mom and pop shop I worked for early on in my career told me how the hourly rates for service repairs work. Essentially it’s divided into thirds. If it costs 100 dollars an hour to fix whatever, the tech should be paid a third, a third goes to overhead/supplies and the last third goes to other employees that keep the business going. If you do that you can have a profitable business. If a dealership is charging 250 dollars an hour and the mechanic isn’t getting 82-83 bucks an hour something is wrong.

I got laid off for AI about 6 months ago. Decided maybe going onto the trades was a good alternative. Fairly handy with (*admittedly older) cars, I looked into becoming a mechanic. Do you know what multiple perpetually short-handed mechanic shops near me pay their guys? $10/hour and you need to own your own tools. I had most of the actual tools, but those diagnostic computers? No sir. And the real ones (you need multiple for different brands) cost combined more than the damn toolbox loaded with the tools!), get your certifications on your own, and even then you are at risk of not being hired because someone with 5+ years' experience may apply. Told the manager that did give me an interview that I could make more flipping burgers. So I did for a little while as a 'it's a check' thing. Now I managed to get into a dock position at a warehouse. Same neighborhood, $23/hr. To throw pre-sorted boxes into a truck. Once DOMS wears off, the only real skills you need it basic situational awareness and being able to play IRL Tetris. Somehow THAT pays more than double the mechanic jobs? No wonder no one want to work as one!

I work on my car i wouldn't really wana work on others because it be stressful if u brake your car u fix it and its your own problem but if u brake some one else's its a bigger problem in general cars are not fun to work on half the time u try take something off and a screw brakes I understand why people don't wana be techs
I still get oil changes at my local dealership along with tire rotation and tire balance. I usually do this every 3-4 months depending on how many miles I drive and it costs about $120 in total. Everything else I do myself. Just changed my brakes last week. Saved $900 because that's what the shop wanted to charge.

I totaled my electric Kia Niro. I ran over a rock and it smashed through the battery casing. Kia quote me $27000 for the repair and that was a deal they said. The list price on the battery was $36k. They offered it to me at cost just to sell the job. I said F that. Insurance totaled the F out of it.

I had a torque converter on a 700r4 start to shudder and the transmission was slipping and needed rebuilt. <br>The lowest quote I got for a 'Rebuild' only from a transmission certified shop, if i removed and reinstalled the transmission myself, was $2,300, more than the price of a new 700r4.<br>After asking everyone I work with if they 'knew a guy', I finally got the number of a guy rebuilding transmissions out of his garage, and a $300 seal kit and a $150 torque converter later, $750 was the total cost of the rebuild. <br>Functions like new, bless this old man working from his garage, he saved me ~$1,000.<br>Edit: I almost forgot, it was an insane amount of labor to do by yourself, as a first timer, it genuinely took me ~25 hours to uninstall and reinstall. And if you dont have access to a shop with proper lifts it can be dangerous and extremely difficult to do in your driveway. I dropped my truck off the jackstands at one point, I had blocks set up under the jacks in case that happened, so everything was ok in the end, but it was very scary.
I wouldn't have paid thousands for an ECU that could be sitting in a junkyard somewhere

I’m betting this is the last generation of corolas I’ll be able to work myself AS A PROFESSIONAL TECHNICIAN. it’s cause specialty tools, reprogramming and authentication. The average person can’t do shit. Even replacing the windshield requires to be recalibrated cause of sensors which I get BUT WHY ATTACH IT TO THE FUCKING ONE THING THAT LIKES TO BE CHIPPED. it’s so sad man
To be fair, I do not believe that newer vehicles are "safer". Older vehicles are units, I understand converting impact energy into the vehicle, but when it comes to sensors, driving features, and hydraulic parts going to electronics, when something begins to become intermittent is when they get dangerous. I just fixed a power steering rack on a 2021 ford bronco and it was having a communication issue between the abs module. Steering would cut out and get stiff not allowing the driver to turn at certain times. Tell me how thats safe? Electronics fail more than a mechanical component. And if a mechanical part fails, its usually not the end of the world.

yeah i just do the basic maintenance myself. i used to work on other ppls cars but after they made basic things electric that needs a special computer i kinda gave up being a home or mobile mechanic. i am not about to buy a special computer worth thousands just to change your breaks. got me hyucked up.
Bought a 2019 ford fusion from a lot back in 2024 gotcha great deal on it and the credit loan got approved perfect literally 5 days into having the car transmission blows out because fly wheel broke in HALF while driving on the interstate. No problem people I bought it from ordered a used transmission fixed it for me no cost nothing. Didn’t really have any issues with the car since outside of routine oil changes that I was doing myself. Fast forward to this year around the same time transmission blows out again. This time came absolutely out of no where literally was just one day it was working next day it’s not. Bought it to the cheapest shop in town 3500. Told the loan people to go pick it up from the shop cuz no way I was gonna pay that and still have to pay them every month.

I only ever get older cars, and I'm somebody that wants desperately to learn how to fix my own car but every single time I have an issue it is something that is so far out of my wheelhouse that I have to take it to a shop. <br><br>I got real lucky and got me an Oldsmobile 88 Delta, and almost everything on it is great except for the suspension. So imagine my horror when I take it to a repair shop and they tell me that it's going to take $4,000 to fix the suspension, and I unfortunately got no choice but to take it to a professional shop because I don't have the knowledge of suspension for most of the problems, nor the tools for any of it. <br><br>The only thing I can do is shop around and hope that I find a cheaper garage, and hope that my worn out suspension will last long enough for me to accumulate the money to fix it. Oh and I'm also unemployed, my primary income is disability and selling blood so that'll take a lot longer xD<br><br>I love this society man, there's no winning.

not only do you pay 500$+ for a full coverage you also pay for the deductible, the crazy thing about this is the insurance company doesnt pay for OEM parts which means they find the cheapest parts available bringing the quality down on your expensive car, i asked for oem parts and they said i needed to pay MORE. In conclusion insurance is a scam and its ok to commit fraud

Had a clunking sound when moving the steering wheel at low speeds (2017 440i), informed the repair shop of a common issue with the steering rack, there’s a bushing that can go bad early. No call, just emailed me a quote for new tie rods. Called and turned out their diag was just shaking the wheels. Asked mechanic to remove the rubber boots and inspect the tie rods. Guess what? Perfectly fine. Doubled the diag fee from $75-150, and I declined the duralast tie rods they quoted me for. Came to pick up, paid their diag fee, and then found a scuff on my door when leaving which thankfully they buffed out for free (always take pictures when you drop off folks). Took it home and did the fix myself, $60 part and an hour of work, no more clunk. that’s my most recent F-U bill. Also this shop had over 600 5 star reviews… people love to get scammed.

All the problems I've had with my 2010 focus, I've fixed myself. I now know so much about this focus work beater I have, I want another one that has a working AC and radio because mine went out years ago and is in rough shape.
Did an engine swap, replaced the front end of a civic had to cut and weld, repaired my t boned type s very bad, cut and weld too, replaced my rsx clutch, my Corolla clutch, installed coil overs, swapped steering wheel, straight piped my type s, also swapped the intake manifold added a could air intake, adapted rdx injectors (well not yet) and I’m saving for a hondata I also tinted my windows the only thing I could never do was install apple play in my civic cause the connections were different and when it comes to cables I’m useless most of the time, I also installed fog lights and exhaust manifold on my buddy’s civic
wife has a 2018 jeep renegade, had to service the maf sensor, gotta pull the inner fender to access it, modern cars are terrible to work on

I was in automotive schooling, 2 classes away from graduating and then I started working flag hours. It lasted about 3 months before I never wanted to do it again in my life. Haven’t looked back. I still work on my own cars but I deserve to get paid what I am worth. Automotive was not that.

Got a FiST - did this within 30 days so I didn't have to pay anything but the repair cost of re-building the transmission, fixing the breaks, fixing the rear axle, and welding the exhaust down (apparently the old owner beat the piss out of it). It drives like a dream now - but holy shit. <br><br>12 grand was the cost to get everything put in... I'd be selling a kidney right now if not for the 30 day warranty on it and the insurance plan I had for it

As a lead tech doing all makes all models for the past 10 years, don't buy ANY American car or truck. Unreliable garbage. IDC if it's a CTSV, it's an over engineered pile of shit made of bubble gum and tin foil just like the rest of them. Don't buy a Mitsubishi ANYTHING. Over complicated garbage with constant electrical problems and no info available. Don't buy any Mazda with i-eloop. Archaic dogshit half hybrid system with constant issues. Don't buy Kia/Hyundai. Engine consumes half its oil capacity between oil changes and eats itself because of poor engine shipping methods. The engine blocks are molded with styrofoam and were being shipped in sand filled crates that left residue on bearings and destroyed motors prematurely.
My mom's car was broken into and because it has a computer software that it completely is disabled. Insurance (Fred Loya, NEVER do business with them, they are pos) says they cant do anything despite boasting full coverage when she signed the contract claiming thw deductible is "too low" when they never disclosed that before she signed. Also dealership pretends they can't help because they only handle defective vehicles which is also false I suspect. They especially take advantage of old women. I try to help my mom too doing all legal and policy research but she keeps having a meltdown so really all I can do is report them to the BBB for their garbage unethical and predatory dealings and report them to DORA of Colorado and Colorado Bureau to see what else they did that is against the books. Ive had great experience wi DORA and Colorado Bureau in the past being ripped off by another car business in similar fashion so this should munch their cheeks to regret.

I wouldn't say it was a repaid but I had aot of mandatory overtime take hold of me for 3 months and I paid the 13k left of my truck outright to dodge the $600 payment I had been making for 3 years. Hopefully my tacoma will NOT require any repair of any type beyond regular maintenance

My dad's, then my, 98' jimmy is sitting in my driveway right now. We've had it 14 years and dads about to send it to the big junker in the sky. It still runs but the drivers seat is completely broken, the AC doesnt work, the 4WD quit workin 13 years ago, and the front end has to be completely rebuilt. I'm sad to see ol' Jimmy go. Truly a workhorse. They dont make em like that anymore

I learned how to replace my radiator because I got quoted 1600 dallrs for a replacement. I am without a car lift so I had to take it out the top of the engine bay as opposed to the bottom. This took me 200 dollars and 7 hours of labor. I do not regret my decision
I like in the EU. My wife and I bought our first car at 36. If the car just goes away we will be just fine. Having a system where your car is the primary transportation is stupid. Cheers!
