Islam is fundamentally a monotheistic faith. However, when it is presented as a comprehensive way of life or used as the basis for legislation, it can become closely intertwined with the social norms, cultural practices, forms of reasoning, and political structures of 7th-century Arabia and the broader medieval Middle East. This, in my view, is the central problem. The distinction between the religious principles of Islam and the historical cultural context in which those principles were articulated needs to be carefully examined. Islam should be understood beyond the confines of medieval Arab tribal society; otherwise, historical customs and social structures risk being treated as essential elements of the faith itself.
